Breaking the Ice

With temperatures barely breaking above freezing for the past week, the Hudson River has been carrying steady fields of ice floes — ice that formed far upriver and drifted south with the current. Tonight I headed to the waterfront hoping to catch the ice at sunset, and it delivered.

As the sun continued to set, the colors behind Midtown intensified.

Then, the colors behind downtown Manhattan popped, too.

The scene was already incredible when, almost on cue, a tugboat appeared to my left, cutting toward me through the ice. I caught the captain’s eye — I’m pretty sure he nodded, and I nodded back. I suspect he knew that once he passed through the frame, he’d turn a great scene into an even better photograph.

He continued southbound.
