Turks and Caicos: Mornings on Grace Bay

I recently returned from a week in Turks and Caicos. Every day followed a similar rhythm: bobbing in the bright aqua sea, reading by the pool, and sailing Hobie Cats. Typical resort stuff.

My favorite part of each day, before the resort began buzzing with activity, was returning to the same stretch of Grace Bay before sunrise. Somehow, the beach never repeated itself.

Finding a subject on the beach was sometimes a challenge. The obvious one was the pier.

Boats were moored just offshore, while lights at the end of the pier illuminated the water and created a colorful gradient at dawn.

The pier was also a good place to catch the sunset.

Typically, the best light for photography comes at sunrise and sunset. Turks and Caicos was an exception to that rule. The star of the show was the calm, crystal-clear water, which revealed a rainbow of colors — including its signature turquoise — when the sun shone brightly overhead.

There was some wildlife to be found around the resort grounds and the beach as well. I spotted yellow-crowned night herons, black-crowned night herons, and green herons.

Cats and chickens also seemed to be everywhere. The chickens had tiny chicks trailing behind them, searching for bits of food dropped by tourists.

From the ground and from above, Turks and Caicos is a beautiful place. Even if you usually prefer an aisle, this is one of those times to consider the window seat.
